Thatched roofs

I'm back from Seattle and trying to get back into a story-writing mood... really. But seeing Tiana's incredible sprawling village inspired me to try making one myself. (You may have noticed I don't often do outdoor scenes. I would like to remedy this.)
I kind of used Dublin as a lot-building scratchpad, and I am not sure I will save most of what's on this lot. However I tried some ideas and got some new ones while I was working, and I think I am going to try to build some of the streets around Nothelm or down by the king's market, and let our characters out of the house once in a while. (Can you see it? Gwynn dragging Connie down to the cloth merchant to pick out some silk and hoping maybe to see Cearball on the way? And Connie looking out for Malo? And bumping into Finn out for a stroll with Belsar instead? Or something? )
And, anyway... what was I saying? Oh, have you guys seen this?
It is by Ermelinde at Sims2Collage. It is a 6 square by 9 square "roof" object that you can plop on the top of an appropriately sized house, and instant thatched roof!
It looks really incredible in the game. From street level:
And again:
And from the air:
My only quibble with this item is that when you put it on the "roof" of a house (i.e. make a flat floor on top of the house and put the roof object on it) it dips down slightly into the room below. (If you are in cameraman mode and can actually see it, that is.) This is not entirely a bad thing: it is flat underneath and has a reasonably good dark wood texture -- this lady really pays attention to detail -- so you get an instant wooden ceiling in your little house.
However, if you're like me and use the ceiling tiles, this object actually dips below the tiles so you can't see them any more. Furthermore, since it technically is located on the floor above (and normally outside) it is lit however outside objects are lit. Thus (if you are using the Gunmod lighting and can actually see a difference) on a bright summer day, your "ceiling" will be brilliantly lit even though your room might have no windows or lamps, and at night your ceiling will be almost black no matter how many lamps you put in the room.
I figure I can shoot around that by hiding the upper floor level, but it will be a problem if there's a building outside the window, since it would also have its roof or second story hidden. Oh well -- challenge.
One more thing -- it is an object, not a real roof, so hiding the game roofs does not hide this object. Remember to put the entire "floor" on the roof before putting it down or your Sims will get rained on.
Altogether, I am really looking forward to using this roof in some lots. Finally I can build a proper Anglo-Saxon house! If I had had some of the CC I have now -- including this guy -- I think the architecture of Lothere would have been quite different.
OK, back to writing now... for real...

Submitted by François on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 14:45.Just wow ! This roof is amazing ! It's just so perfect. Lothere is getting better as the years go on, it's so impressive. And village scenes ? It would be grand !
Are you going to use that

I already have. Or at least

Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Mon, 07/07/2008 - 18:06.Ok so what if you built a 2 story building with no second floor, then just did ceiling tiles over your first floor. Would you still be able to see the roof?
Thatched Roofiness?

Anyway her little house is nice Lady Sela would be so happy for her sister. Aia is a home owner!
Devin, my graphics always
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 10:51.Devin, my graphics always look blurry like that when I start my game. I just have to click around in the catalog a bit and build some things until I have loaded enough textures that my video card pleads for mercy and my CPU steps in. I run at 100% CPU from then on, but at least the graphics are sharp.
Penelope, well, I could do that... but then I would have a weird-looking towering house from the outside, which does defeat the purpose of the sexy thatched roofiness. I guess what I could do is remember how to use those terrain-leveling + constrainFloorElevation false cheats to make a second story that is only a few clicks high, and put the roof on top of that. Hmm...
I mostly don't like building with cheats though. It always bites me in the behind at a later time.
Too true. Ok so what if you
Submitted by PenelopetheFox on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 14:57.Too true. Ok so what if you built a shopping district with 1 story buildings for outdoor scenes and a 2 story district for indoor scenes? (I don't know why I am suggesting this since it sounds like a ridiculous amount of work and I probably wouldn't do it myself.)
Funny you should suggest
Submitted by Lothere on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 16:47.Funny you should suggest that... just a few weeks ago I was getting so frustrated with waiting for one of my big castles to load (and then shooting pictures in it) that I almost made up my mind to break my cardinal rule and rebuild the "castle" as a series of little Hollywood-style sets on separate lots.
Then I got added one and a half gigabytes of RAM to my computer and suddenly everything was SO MUCH FASTER! So I was relieved. The rule stands! No sets!
Actually I think I am going to try the idea I had of a super-short 2nd story. Since they're little detached houses anyway, it probably won't be a problem. It's not like I'll be building them in stages.
