Maire and Lathir

Were they close? Did Lathir know of Aengus' affair? I do wonder if Lathir was alive how would she have taken Maire's suicide.

Heh, I think I answered this

Maire and Lathir were not extra-special-close, but they were sisters and they loved each other, I'm sure. Don't forget that Lathir had just turned 7 when Maire got married to Malcolm and moved away, so it's not like they had gossip sessions together or anything. I don't think they ever met again till Lathir married Stein, and even then, once Lathir was settled into her new home, they never saw each other again.
Lathir knew about Benedict, but Aengus's actual "affair" with Lena didn't come out till after Lathir was dead. Remember, Maire had her twins on the day that affair hit the evening news, and she named the girl Lathir after her recently-dead sister.
I can't guess what Lathir would have thought of all of this. We hardly knew her.
