It's all about the eyes

A comment from Lothere has led me to create this new topic.
A few of the characters do have uniques features, but the one that stands out the most, are the eyes.

So I've made a shortlist of some of the characters and what I think their eyes signify.

Eirik - Strength
Malo - Sadness
Imin - Hypnotic
Cubby - Cuteness
Leofric - Lust, yet longing too (can't decide)
Iylaine - Sharpness
Araphael (in all guises) - Childlike
Father Aelfden - Worry and Humility (yet his eyes are extremely piercing)
Eithne - Fear, yet there's an inner strength to her too
Cian - Cynicism and world weariness.
Egelric - Deepness and Sorrow
Vash - Longing and Jealousy
Matilda - Charm and Cheek

I know there are many other characters to choose from, but I can't quite decide on those.

Forgive me if my assumptions are incorrect, these are only my interpretations for each character listed.

An interesting topic of

An interesting topic of reflection, hmm... I am sure that our interpretations of the characters' eyes are often influenced by what we know about their characters, but likewise some of what we think about the characters is due to the effect of their eyes. In particular for those with very striking eyes, such as Malo. So everything that you said is legitimate.

It is also interesting how the same Sim eyes can give different effects on different characters. Egelric, Dunstan, Matilda, and Leia all have the same eyes, for example. Eirik and Aelfden do too, I believe.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but since it's open to interpretation, I'll add some of my own.

I find Eirik's eyes to be rather mild most of the time, wide and tranquil like a calm sea. Every once in a while, as Sigrid saw in "Sigrid sees another face", they can become ferocious, of course. But I think that both Eirik's goofiness and his violence are masks he puts on... the real Eirik is sort of wide-eyed and wondering how he got here and what he's supposed to do now. He is strong, but he's stronger than he realizes.

I totally agree with Iylaine and the sharpness of her eyes. She has always had a keen look, since she was a baby. And Cian too -- I think his eyes express his personality quite well.

Eithne on the other hand I find more childlike than Araphel. Eithne and Cat have the same eyes, but you can hardly guess since they have such different expressions in them. Connie has wonderful dreamy eyes too. I really think she has the eyes of a seer, which from the way her character is developing seems possibly true.

Araphel's eyes are supposed to be gloomy, but somehow they have never seemed to get there for me. I wouldn't call them childlike though. I will have to think about that.

I like that you saw jealousy in Vash's green eyes. Smile

Oh! And another with very expressive eyes is Ethelwyn. Sometimes a bit haughty, but it's a cold, lonely, sad haughtiness. Even with Mouse, even when he smiles, some of the sadness has always stayed in his eyes.

Oh oh! And Gwynn! Always with her wide, trusting, dreamy eyes, still not realizing that romance isn't always real, and still not realizing that people can be hurtful. (Like Finn with her, over and over... she keeps showing up with her wide, trusting, dreamy eyes, and he always sends her away in tears. Smile)

And Margaret with her wicked eyes! and Gunnilda with her big, dark, wise eyes! And the Old Man with his cuuuuute!

OK I should get back to work now. Razz

Those are good! I was actually thinking today that Gwynn having her father's eyes is a lot of what differentiates her from her mother. They have a lot of facial similarity, but Gwynn has those big, sweet, loving, trusting eyes that are nothing like Matilda's.
Malo's eyes are indeed gorgeous, and very expressive. I agree that Ethelwyn's eyes also show a kind of sad, cold, empty haughtiness.
And I love Connie's eyes. They are so dreamy and thoughtful. I really, really like Connie - I think she's a really interesting character already.

Connie is one of the

Connie is one of the characters whose eyes I have already spent some time describing. In particular in "Condal sees by a different light":

Condal’s father had always said that no one knew the color of her eyes.  They changed with every change in the light: blue when the light was rosy, green when it was golden, gray when it was blue.  He used to joke that one could only see their true color in the dark.

The last line has particular significance, but heaven knows when I'll get around to revealing it. There are a certain number of things that I have been trying to say lately that I have not yet found an opportunity to say.

Also Hetty's daughter Brunhilde's eyes, in "Ethelwyn tells someone":

She only looked up at him with her mournful eyes that always seemed to understand.

Ethelwyn had always explained her eyes to himself as the result of having absorbed too much of her mother’s own sorrow while she was still in the womb.

Once, however, when Sir Sigefrith had described them as smiling eyes and Egelric had corrected him and called them devilish, Alred had put forth the theory that Bruni’s eyes were no more than mirrors for the eyes of others—for Alred himself called them seductive.

Ethelwyn hoped that none of them remembered that he had always called them sad.

I can't think of any others at the moment, though everyone has already made a big deal of Malcolm and his golden eyes, and Murchad too.

I always thought of

Submitted by Verity on Tue, 02/19/2008 - 23:21.

I always thought of Araphel's eyes as being wise. They are like a fog which barely covers some inner depth which you can't quite understand. They are the same on Liaden... for a baby she looks extremely wise, like she knows something you don't but she is at peace with it.

Malo's eyes are the same actually, although his wisdom is more innocent than Araphel's. Both of them have very wise eyes but that makes sense given how long they have lived and what they are.

It is interesting though... I think the character really is determining a lot what you think of the eyes even though they often help to enhance that feature. Cian and Eallair (the King in my story) have the same colour eyes, but on Eallair I always think they make him look a bit bemused. Actually... don't Ethelwyn and Cian have the same colour eyes? Did you guys already say that? It is so cool how different the same colour eyes can look from one person to the next.
