Alfred the Great

Out of curiosity, is Alred in any way based on Alfred the Great?
I just switched on a documentary on the history of monarchies and it happens to be about a guy named Alfred the Great, an intelectual man responsible for uniting England. It reminds me in a very remote way of Alred who bears a similar name, is considered intelectual in his time, and has some influence with King Sigfrith and has connections in other high places - but I do believe the lived during vastly different times.

Alfred the Great didn't
Submitted by Lothere on Mon, 02/20/2012 - 16:50.Alfred the Great didn't inspire me in creating my characters, but I bet he is an inspiration *to* my characters. He was seen as a great king even then.
The most important influence that King Alfred has on my story is the culture that he created: the emphasis on education, the translation of Latin works into English (which elevated the status of the English language), and his legal reforms. Alred and Sigefrith are both inspired by his example.
