Llen finds Aia alone. He enters in a rush and immediately begins shoving her around and intimidating her. He throws her against the wall and prepares to punch her in the belly to cause her to miscarry if she is already pregnant. But now that he is this close to her, he begins remembering the 10-year-old girl he once knew, and finds it difficult to continue. By now he is accustomed to acting cruelly without a conscience, but he must repress his emotions to do so, and seeing Aia again is waking a lot of poignant memories. Llen used to “babysit” Aia while Imin was off courting Sela.

Eventually Aia gets free of him and begins distracting him by showing him the food she gets from the men. In times past he had once promised her that he would bring her some man-food someday and they would have a feast. Aia proposes they do that now. She sits him down at her table and begins serving him drink after drink—ale, cider, and wine. Soon, though he doesn’t realize what it means, Llen becomes drunk. He gets sentimental and affectionate, and Aia simply smiles and presses another drink on him.
