Alwy finds Iylaine in the tower room

Iylaine leaned into the corner of the stuffy tower room.

Iylaine leaned into the corner of the stuffy tower room. She looked at her hands, tinted green by the light that came in through the colored glass of the windows, and tried to remember the color they had when she sat beneath the trees, and the light had come filtering through the leaves. It was too green here. She thought the windows should rather be blue, but the Duke liked green. She would remember to look at her hands the next time she went to the King’s castle—the windows in the nursery were blue.

But more wrong than the light was the air. There was no breeze at all, and the July sun falling on the wooden roof made the air get hotter and hotter as the morning wore on, and it seemed as if the room were getting more and more tightly filled with air. She thought that if she stayed here much longer, she would suffocate, or be crushed.

Egelric asks for help

Egelric found Alwy and Gunnilda seated on the bench behind their house.

Egelric found Alwy and Gunnilda seated on the bench behind their house, looking out to the south over the downs that were dimly lit by a sliver of moon. If it had been light enough for him to see them before they saw him, he would have turned back, but he only learned they were there when he saw Alwy wave.

He called a greeting when he was close enough that he wouldn’t need to shout, and he heard Gunnilda saying to Alwy, “I told you that was Egelric…”

Egelric sees a dark lady

Egelric walked quickly through the woods.

Egelric walked quickly through the woods, too winded from climbing the hill to continue the song he had been humming when he left the King’s castle. The night was as dark as sackcloth, and Egelric regretted not having taken a torch.

He regretted it all the more when he remembered that this night must have been the new moon. Of course, nothing had happened since they had shut the elf woman up in the crypt with Druze, but all the same, he would have felt safer at a fireside. He thought he might climb all the way to Alwy’s house and borrow a torch if the family wasn’t yet abed.

Sigefrith sees Maud and a deer

Sigefrith walked quietly through the garden, but he stopped when Maud came into view.

Sigefrith walked quietly through the garden, but he stopped when Maud came into view. Before her he could make out the head and neck of a deer whose body was hidden from him behind a bush. Maud sat quietly, and the deer only flicked its ears nervously as each stared into the other’s eyes. But then a morning breeze blew up from behind him and carried his odor over to the animal, and it darted away before he scarcely realized it had moved.

He could see her shoulders slump in disappointment, and he briefly wondered whether he should not turn around and go back to the castle, so she wouldn’t realize it was he who had spoiled her pleasure. But he hadn’t the strength to deny himself his own.

Egelric has a chat with Iylaine

'Baby, could you come with me for a moment?'

“Baby, could you come with me for a moment?” her Da asked. “I need to speak with you.”

Iylaine dropped the wooden tiger she was holding. She didn’t like the sound of her Da’s voice.

Sigefrith has a chat with Malcolm

'I knew it!'

“I knew it!” Sigefrith laughed. “If this cub is with Malcolm I shall find the both of you in the stables.”

Colban shrieked and ran giggling away from his Papa to the protection of his favorite friend.

Eadgith wants to talk

Sigefrith went humming softly down the dark corridor.

Sigefrith went humming softly down the dark corridor. Alred had composed a new song, and he, Sigefrith, Egelric, and Matilda had conspired to set a bawdy verse to it that evening. He chuckled now in the middle of his tune at the thought of it.

Maud had gone to bed early, claiming a headache, but Sigefrith suspected she had not approved of their little fun. Alred was Dionysus himself when he allowed himself to drink, and he did have a way of drawing others into the revelry.

Iylaine gets wet and dry again

Iylaine sat dreaming beside the small pond.

Iylaine sat dreaming beside the small pond in the hills behind the Nothelm stables. She never swam in it, of course, but she told herself that she loved it. She couldn’t say why. The water was always so still and clear, and it reflected the sky and the willow branches like a broad mirror.

Sometimes, when she felt adventurous, she would lie on the steep bank, sick with nervous excitement, and look down into the water. Sometimes she even dared pull her hair back behind her ears and look at her little elfin face. She tried to inspect her ears, but as she had told Vash, one could not really look at one’s own ears. But she secretly liked the little points on either side of her head. She thought they might be pretty, for elf’s ears.

Cenwulf opens the room

Cenwulf took a torch with him when he went to open Colburga's room.

Cenwulf took a torch with him when he went to open Colburga’s room. He did not think the torch or lamp left in the room would light after so long.

The room was stuffy with nine months of dust and the heat of June. Everything was as they had left it—they had not even made the bed after lifting her body from it. It was not merely a timeless, empty room—it was the room she had left, frozen in time at the instant she had left it—and she had only left a moment ago.

Alred has more news for Matilda

'Good afternoon, ladies, gentleman, and sir.'

“Good afternoon, ladies, gentleman, and sir,” Alred said to Matilda, Gwynn, Cedric, and Leila as he came into the hall. The children were playing happily together on the floor, but his wife and Leila were sitting stiffly alongside. He had not, apparently, interrupted a conversation when he came in.

Matilda smiled weakly up at him and then looked back at the children.
