Alred is surprised

“Here we are, my lady, you go to Mama Wynna now,” the voice in the kitchen was saying.
Gunnilda came down the hall to find Duke Alred handing the Lady Margaret to her daughter.

Githa was relieved to see a smile on Theobald’s face as he turned to her. He was in a good mood. Lately he had been dreading the arrival of letters from Lothere, but perhaps he would take it well today. And perhaps there was no bad news within—although she still didn’t know what kind of bad news had been in the previous letters, other than the illness of Colburga and her children.
“Aren’t you supposed to be resting?” he scolded gently, laying a hand on her belly.

“Mama!” Bedwig called slyly.
“Oh, Bedwig!” Gunnilda groaned as she turned to see her naked son grinning proudly up at her. “I just put your shirt back on you, and tied it real good, and now you got it off again. Wynna! How did this boy get his shirt off!” she called down the hall.

Egelric closed the barn door behind them after they left, and Alred and Sigefrith headed out towards the road. Egelric, Osric, and the priest had stayed to take care of the body, while Alwy had left earlier to take Gunnilda home after bringing her to confirm that this was the man she had seen.
“Do you suppose we can trust that man of Alwy’s?” Sigefrith asked. “He’s the only one I don’t know.”

“Osric, wait,” Egelric said softly as the men came up alongside the barn, and he lay a hand on the hip of the mare who walked next to him.
Osric and the horse halted at once.

“How late are you girls going to stay up?” Bertie asked.
“I don’t know,” Iylaine said warily, “how late are you boys going to stay up?”

“Well, well, Gunnie,” Githa said as she settled wearily into the chair Gunnilda offered her. “I’ve heard some interesting news about you.”
“Why, what?”

Gunnilda had seen Alred riding up to her house, but she was surprised to find him holding his tiny daughter when she opened the door to him.
“Your Grace had that precious infant on that beast you call a horse?” she asked.

“I know a few things about it, but I don’t know if I should tell you two,” Malcolm said importantly.
“Why not?” Bertie asked.
