Alwy comes early
“Da, I think someone is coming!” Iylaine called from the door to the front room. A moment later her thought was confirmed by a knock.
“Alwy!” she cried when she opened the door, wrapping her arms around his legs.

Sigefrith asks about a letter
“Good morning, Cenwulf. You look grim. Is Witburga no better?”
“I’m afraid she’s worse, though Colburga doesn’t believe it. She is so exhausted now that she can cough without waking.”
Iylaine asks a question
“You’re not falling asleep, are you, Da?” Iylaine asked.
“Perhaps I am,” Egelric yawned. It was too pleasant to lie before the fire and listen to his little girl prattle on about her day with Gunnilda and the children. It made up for his day spent out in the November wind.
Sigefrith finds what is underneath
“It’s about time you got here, Alred,” Sigefrith grumbled. “When I said ‘after breakfast’ I didn’t expect you to rise at noon.”
“It isn’t noon!” Alred protested. “And I had to go by the hill and see how the chapel is coming.”
Alred goes to Father Brandt
“It is seldom enough I see thee here, young Alred,” Father Brandt rumbled.
“Church involves a lot of sitting still—something I’ve never been good at,” Alred admitted sheepishly.
Alwy shows Egelric
“Well, Alwy, that was quite a climb,” Egelric said as they reached the top of the hill. I hope that what you wanted to show me was worth the trip.”
“I hope so too,” Alwy said anxiously.
Iylaine is accused
“My Da says that I shall have my own pony and I shall learn to ride, just like Dunstan,” Iylaine said imperiously.
Maud sends for Egelric
“Egelric! How kind of you to come and see us,” the Queen smiled.
“Your Majesty commanded it,” Egelric said quietly.
The Baron comes to see the King
“Theobald!” Sigefrith cried, extending his hand to his friend. “Welcome home! I scarcely recognize you!” Theobald was dressed as befit a Baron, but Sigefrith spoke more of the haggard look his face had taken on in so short a time.
“I thank Your Majesty for the welcome, but this is no longer my home,” Theobald said.
Sigefrith explains to Maud
Sigefrith sighed as he climbed the stairs to the great hall. He had just seen Colban and Malcolm off with much regret—he seldom had so much fun as when they were here. Still, he would be happy to see Alred again—for some reason his friend had seemed to drop by less frequently while the Scots were around.
Egelric had gone with them, intending to ride as far as Leol, quit them there, and come back through Thorhold. Thus Sigefrith could yet look forward to a last message of farewell from Gog and Magog, as well as the news from Theobald, if not Theobald himself. But until Egelric returned, the castle would certainly seem empty, and the days bland.
