Egelric gets what's coming to him

Egelric could not see Ethelwyn's curls anywhere in the crowd of heads bobbing before him.

Egelric was a tall man and so was Ethelwyn, but nevertheless Egelric could not see Ethelwyn’s curls anywhere in the crowd of heads bobbing before him. Nor was his steward in the corner by the door where Egelric had seen him standing only a few moments before. He had turned his head for only an instant to wink at Lili, but when he had turned it back, Ethelwyn was gone.

But there was that door. It led to Dunstan’s former study, now empty, and beyond that to the stairs down to the court and freedom. Egelric told himself that if Ethelwyn had fled through that door, then his steward was less of a man than he had believed.

The Duchess was not displeased to find herself too heavily pregnant to dance.

The Duchess was not displeased to find herself too heavily pregnant to dance. She was not the dancer her sister was, and by being exempt from the festivities, she was better able to observe and make certain that everyone was having a pleasant time.

She had the impression that her husband was a little too occupied making certain the Princess was having a pleasant time to pay much attention to the other guests. Dunstan knew that he was expected to return home for the holidays, and so far he had not. His father had not yet had the heart to order him home.

Eadwyn makes a move

He thought he must have averted something.

King Sigefrith said that when a man saved another’s life, it was often the man who had done the saving who formed a stronger attachment to the other than the man who had been saved.

Eadwyn chose not to believe that he had prevented a murder by showing up at Sir Leofwine’s manor the day before—though he had nearly committed one when he had returned later that evening—but he thought he must have averted something.
