Egelric lets go

Egelric was surprised to find Iylaine looking happier and more at ease than Lady Gwynn and Lady Margaret.

Egelric was surprised to find Iylaine looking happier and more at ease than Lady Gwynn and Lady Margaret. It was true the girls would be losing their best friend, who was more like an elder sister to them, so their ambivalence might easily be explained. But he had never seen a bride who looked less nervous.

He also thought he had never seen a bride who looked more beautiful. Still, it seemed there was something sad that lay over her beauty like frost upon a flower, and he felt the chill of it down into his heart.

Malcolm listens to the voices

Malcolm had always thought himself a good Christian.

Malcolm had always thought himself a good Christian. He did not even emulate Sigefrith in his never ending litany of colorful blasphemies, although he did find occasions to invoke the name of the devil all the day long. Malcolm knew what it was to fast all day, as one could do during Lent, nor was this his first nightlong vigil.

Nevertheless there was something about this night and this church and this vigil that was beyond his ken. It did not feel right. It did not feel real.

Sigefrith faces three Colbans

Caedwulf talked on, but Sigefrith scarcely heard.

Caedwulf talked on, but Sigefrith scarcely heard. He had brought his son in to talk about his plans for the abbey—for the opportunity to build in stone was the only feature of an abbey that could interest Sigefrith—but Caedwulf had quickly turned the subject to the question of which mares would be bred to which stallions in the coming year.

Sigefrith thought that, if he knew his son, Caedwulf was rather more pleased than not that his father was not paying attention: it meant there was a chance he would carelessly agree to something of which he might not have otherwise approved.

Eadgith speaks of miracles

'Oh, Sigefrith, you waited for me!'

“Oh, Sigefrith, you waited for me!” Eadgith smiled. “That is so kind!”

She thought it kind! It was true he was exhausted, but it was not for reasons of kindness that he had waited up for his wife… whom he had not seen in ten days.

Eadgith pours oil on troubled waters

Queen Eadgith woke up that morning already smiling with contentment.

Queen Eadgith woke up that morning already smiling with contentment. She missed her husband and her stepchildren, it was true, but in compensation she had her parents and her littlest sisters. Indeed, she had left her beloved son laughing over the mess he was making of his breakfast in order to go out in search of some of them and make her happiness all the greater.

But she had found no one until she went down into the hall and met her mother standing by the fire with little Mae in her arms.

Alred realizes his mistake

The smile she gave him when he stepped inside told him that Lili had not come prowling in search of her yet.

Alred had spent enough time staring at Margaret’s sleeping body that he was greatly relieved to find Hetty still reading in his study. The smile she gave him when he stepped inside told him that Lili had not come prowling in search of her yet.

And he was relieved to see it was that same sweet smile, that innocent smile—though he knew he would never again see it after this night.
